In January 2013, STV was awarded the local television licences for Glasgow and Edinburgh. STV Glasgow launched on Monday 2nd June 2014, with STV Edinburgh following on Monday 12th January 2015.

Both channels share a common presentation style based on the parent channel STV's branding - itself refreshed on STV Edinburgh's launch day.

In March 2015, it was announced that STV had been awarded further local television licences for Aberdeen, Dundee and Ayr. All the local channels are collaborations between STV and local colleges and universities.
